Eric & Hannah

Preparing for a March wedding can be tough. You never know what to expect in terms of weather. It could be dumping snow and 10 degrees, raining cats and dogs, or a warmer “here comes Spring” day. I was literally prepared for anything, but amazingly Saturday morning greeted us with bright blue skies and plenty of sunshine. I definitely didn’t complain.

On top of the day being absolutely gorgeous, all the little details that Hannah planned for her and Eric’s wedding day were even more gorgeous. I love this couple!! Not only do they have a deep love for the outdoors and good food, but they’re also super stylish with ah-maze-ing taste! When I first met them for their engagement session in Boston, I was immediately excited to have them as clients. Hannah had rented a beautiful Monique Lhuillier dress and Eric wore a dapper black suit. What’s not to love?!

From the art-deco inspired invites to the geometric earrings and classic black stud cufflinks, Eric and Hannah seriously had it going on. When a couple coordinates their entire wedding down to the tiniest details, my heart swoons!! Nothing was left out. Even Hannah’s shoes and hair piece had geometric aspects. LOVE!

It was truly a pleasure to be a part of the beautiful celebration of Eric and Hannah. Their easy-going love for each other draws people in, which all of the nearly 200 guests can attest to. It was beautiful to hear both of their father’s speak words of praise, love, and pride during their toasts to the lovely couple. I truly felt honored to be a part of their big day!!

Ladders: Lindsey

So last year (feels weird to say ‘last year’ already…eek!) I started a little series of shoots called “Ladders”. Basically the idea was to do a bunch of different mini shoots that somehow incorporated ladders in different settings. I’m planning on doing more “Ladders” shoots this year!!!

This was a very spontaneous shoot that I did with my friend, Lindsey, while she was visiting from California last summer. I think we spent a total of 20 minutes shooting after I had ripped up some vines for decor and made my husband drag our ladder up into a little tree grove. Win. Sometimes the most fun I have shooting is when it’s spur of the moment like this one was. It forces me to just let go and let my creativity take over instead of having too much time to think about things. I’m definitely guilty of overthinking things, just ask my husband 🙂

Anyway, without any more rambling, here is the seriously stunning Lindsey…

Desperately Seeking the Path to Purpose

Yesterday I was reminiscing with my mom about graduating college without having a real sense of direction for my photography and how long it took me to find my passion in the field. So I’m going to be sharing bits of my journey with you starting in 2007 when I packed up all my belongings and drove across country to attend the Brooks Institute of Photography.

Moving across the country was HUGE for me. Especially being a small-town girl from Vermont moving to big, sunny California. Driving out I saw a lot of our beautiful country, ended up breaking down in Russellville, AK, and finally arrived in Santa Barbara, CA on July 7, 2007 feeling like a little lost puppy. I could literally do an entire blog post on the drive alone, but I don’t want to completely bore everyone so let’s just skip to starting college…

When I started classes, I was very behind most students. I had never taken a photography class in high school, never used anything but “auto” on my point-and-shoot, and had never even held a professional camera. So when we started learning about all the settings and exposure I was mentally freaking out. FREAKING OUT!!! If you know anything about photography, you know that photography “math” isn’t like real math. It took me a lot longer to fully understand shutter speeds, f-stops, and ISO’s and how they all worked together. I remember crying in my room so many times just trying to understand. Thankfully there was one person in Santa Barbara I could reach out to that I had known from back home. If it weren’t for him taking a couple hours to go over everything with me, I’m not sure If I would have been able to understand it on my own. I know that some people have a very easy time understanding the technical aspects of photography, but I definitely wasn’t one of those people. However, when it came to the more creative side like composition, leading lines, rule of thirds, lighting, etc, I was able to pick that up much faster. Must be the way I’m wired 🙂 My husband was the opposite. All the technical mumbo jumbo came easily to him, but the creative side was more of a struggle. We balance each other out 🙂

Long story short, Brooks was Hard with a capital H. I struggled a lot to keep up but did my best. When I finally had a good grasp on things, it was already my third and final year and time for me to figure out what direction I wanted to take my photography. Commercial? Product? Food? Portraiture? Outdoor? I literally had no clue. I remember being jealous of the students who had started college knowing what they wanted to do with their photography. I wished so badly I had started school with even a little clue of what I liked, but it wasn’t until a year after graduating that things started to fall into place.

During that year I spent hours online searching for inspiration and learned as much as I could from tutorials, blogs, and books. I also converted a small room above my parents store into a mini studio to shoot in and kept applying to as many photography related jobs as I could find. I finally got a response to one application for a retouching job in New York asking if I could come in for an interview and retouching test. After talking to my parents, we decided to make a weekend of it and take the opportunity to visit my grandparents who live right outside the city in New Jersey.

I remember waking up the morning of the interview super nervous and ended up spending wayyyyy too much time picking out an outfit. When we finally arrived in the city, my parents dropped me off in front of what seemed like an unendingly tall building and went to find a Starbucks. I remember walking into that cold building suddenly feeling unexcited and forced myself to climb the six flights of stairs to the office due to the broken elevator. (It was a sign!!) I was greeted at the door by a guy that looked like he had just rolled out of bed and when I looked around the room I saw walls plastered with photos of scantily dressed (if dressed at all) women. I was interviewing to retouch trashy photos. Great. I can’t describe the heavy feeling of disappointment and sadness I felt in that moment. I ALMOST left without even doing the interview but felt guilty dragging my parents into the city so I decided to just give it a go. When I left an hour later, I walked back down the six flights of stairs and had an immediate sense of relief and peace. It was at that moment that I knew I didn’t want to be a retoucher. I really hated the idea of spending my life behind a computer editing photos; It simply wasn’t for me.

Obviously I felt like crap on the drive home having wasted everyone’s time, but I remember my mom saying to me, “Abi, it’s better to have gone through all of this so that you know what you don’t want rather than having to wonder.” It was the confirmation I needed to hear after a not-so-fun experience. The following morning I emailed the company letting them know that whether or not I passed their test, their company was not a good fit for me. Best.Feeling.Ever.

A couple weeks later I was half depressingly, half desparately researching photography hoping to get inspired by something, anything, when I stumbled onto a well known wedding photographer’s site – David Jay. Side note – his site is completely different now because he’s currently focusing on a totally different side of the photography world. Anyway, I dug through every section of his site, read every word twice and looked at every image more than twice. I read every article written by or about David and looked up any references he mentioned, including Mike Colon and Jasmine Star. I finally felt inspired! Finally felt that spark of passion and feeling of purpose I’d been yearning for. I was going to be a wedding photographer.

I spent the following winter studying any material I could find related to wedding photography and started stalking religiously following a bunch of amazing wedding photographers. I read every blog post I could find from photographers I loved, invested in a bunch of Creative Live workshops, and threw myself into the world of wedding photography. It was all I could think of and focus on and that following June of 2012, I photographed my first two weddings – my uncles intimate family wedding and my younger brother’s wedding. Both weddings were filled with anxiety, stress, and emotions, but I will always be grateful to my amazing family for helping me get started on following my passion.

Here are a couple images from my first two weddings:

A Brisk and Beautiful Autumn Wedding

Walking into Sarah and David’s wedding day I didn’t know quite what to expect since I had only briefly met them once a year earlier. I definitely wasn’t expecting everyone to be so calm, friendly, and organized!! I honestly think this was the the first time the entire timeline went perfectly. Mind blown. Most likely due to the fact that Sarah had printed out a play-by-play itinerary for everyone to follow. It was actually hard to believe it was Sarah’s wedding day by how calm and relaxed she was. At one point I asked if she could help me get her dress down, so she just grabbed it off the hook shoved it into my arms. I was so surprised by how nonchalantly she had bunched it up I started laughing. Most brides are extremely worried about their dress getting wrinkled or dirty, but not Sarah. She simply walked into her wedding day accepting that what would be, would be.

Speaking of what would be, would be… the entire day was completely overcast and by the time the ceremony rolled around, everyone was bundled up in coats and gloves waiting for the bride to make her entrance. But despite the clouds and the chill, everyone wore warm smiles and laughed amongst each other. And as Sarah and her parents walked down the aisle lined with flower filled growlers, nothing mattered to David except his bride. These two were truly made for each. Even their two families naturally cliqued in ways you don’t normally see at a wedding. It was truly an honor to be a part of their big day 🙂

All of the details that went into David and Sarah’s wedding were beautiful. I couldn’t get over the INSANE bridal bouquet or the super unique and fun boutonnieres for the guys. And did I mention their awesome idea of putting the wedding cake on a mirror?? LOVE! From the insanely gorgeous floristry to Sarah’s two childhood stuffed animals propped under a chair during the ceremony, David and Sarah’s wedding was truly special and tailored to their fun, joyful, and sweet love for each other.

Congrats Sarah and David!!! may you two always laugh together and may you always sing into cooking utensil microphones when “Let It Go” comes on 🙂

Fall in Love

Once in a while, people pop into our lives that really leave an impression. An impression like you make with your hands when you press them on one of those seriously awesome memory foam pillows. (You know you do it…) This married couple definitely fell into that category – a husband who loves his wife with a quite strength and kindness and a wife who loves him right back with all sorts of sweetness and admiration.

When Parastoo first stepped out of their car, she greeted me with a big, stunning smile and I immediately knew I liked her. She has one of those super warm and sweet personalities that make you want to be around her all the time. Her hubby, Hosein, isn’t much different. They are both such insanely kind people it’s hard not to love them. And it’s just a huge bonus that they happen to be a gorgeous couple!! I mean, seriously, Parastoo is GORGEOUS. At the end of our session I turned to Hosein and said “Hosein, you are one lucky man.” To which he replied with a smile, “I know.” But honestly they’re both truly blessed to have found their soul mates in each other.

Friday started off with a lot of super dark, gray clouds and some rain. I kept looking out the window just hoping with crossed fingers and toes that the weather would clear up since I only had one shot to photograph Hosein and Parastoo’s session. Sometime around noon the clouds started to dissipate and blue started to poke through. YES!! By the time we met up, it was literally one of the most beautiful days we’ve had this Fall. The light was sooo warm and perfect it made all the colorful foliage glow as if it was plugged in. I was ecstatic! Especially since Parastoo had mentioned more than once that she really wanted that “Fall feeling” in the photos. To say she got that “Fall feeling” would be understatement.

Hosein and Parastoo, it was truly an honor to document your love and affection for each other. You’re both fantastic and my life feels enriched to have met you 🙂 I’m looking forward to our paths crossing again in the future!! Wishing you guys lots of laughter, tenderness, and adventure in your marriage!!!!!

An Apple Orchard Love Affair

One of the most interesting parts of my job is being able to observe how people love. Every couple expresses love in a different way, some love quietly through subtle glances that only the other person can interpret, some love softly through gentle touches and smiles and others love boldly. Sabrina and Dustin’s love is a loud kind of love; a love that’s almost palpable and certainly infectious.

Walking into Sabrina and Dustin’s wedding day I knew it was going to be all sorts of gorgeous. Not only because of the incredible property at Alyson’s Orchard or my couple’s insanely good looks, but because when I photographed Sabrina and Dustin’s engagement session earlier this year, I observed how they loved each other loudly and without reserve. I’m always timid when I start engagement sessions because I truly don’t know how my couple will interact with each other and I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable before things get rolling. However, there was no warming up period with these two lovebirds. I would only need to use phrases like “get snuggly” and they would suddenly be locked in a loving embrace staring into each other’s eyes. I would ask one of them to gently touch the other’s face and snap away without needing to say anything else. These types of affections were just so natural to them it made me feel truly blessed to do what I do – document love!

Dustin and Sabrina put a lot of time and effort into planning their big day. When I arrived that morning, they were both in the reception room decorating with their families and friends. People were hanging globes, arranging tables, and setting up little details and décor all over the room ranging from personalized picture frames to candles on every windowsill. They had thought of everything. Sabrina even brought in her own personal vintage couch that they used for a photo booth scene on the back deck. So much pretty!!!

The ceremony sat on top of a hill overlooking a portion of the beautiful orchard that has over 50 varieties of apples! Yum! (I’m not going to lie, it was extremely hard for me not to walk around and taste all the varieties.) The ceremony arbor had been tediously decorated with lots and lots of ribbon that danced in the breeze throughout the vows, the rope ceremony, and their first kiss as husband and wife – a truly lovely effect.

Dustin and Sabrina, every bit of your wedding day was fantastic, especially when we got driven around on a horse-drawn wagon for bride and groom photos 🙂 Thank you for giving me the time to create beautiful memories for you despite having sore feet and a headache. I truly wish you both many more years of happiness, adventure, and lots of love.

Luke + Mollie Engagement

For those of you that don’t know, Mollie is my oldest and dearest friend. We literally grew up two houses apart in Taftsville and spent almost every day together playing games, pretending we were spies, reading, and going on adventures. The memories I have of us as kids and growing up are ones I’ll always treasure. My first epic solo vacation was with Mollie, my first cross-country drive was with Mollie, my first trampoline camp out was with Mollie. The list could go on and on, but for now, let’s get to the real reason I’m writing this post – Mollie is getting married to her college beau, Luke!!!!!!! Woohoo!!!!

This past winter Luke proposed to Mollie on a nighttime snowshoe adventure lit by a pathway of hanging votives. I remember snowshoeing the day after and seeing all these little hanging terrariums with votive candles inside and wondering what they were for. My mind came up with a lot of scenarios as I huffed and puffed up the hill, but the one I never thought of was a romantic, starry-lit proposal. Later that day I happened to run into Mollie in Woodstock, not even knowing she was home from California, and she smiled widely lifting her hand to show me a brilliantly gleaming ring. Obviously I squealed, but had to contain myself since we were in a store 🙂

Immediately after finding out Mollie and Luke were engaged I began picturing what their wedding would be like and soon after began asking myself if I wanted to be their photographer. I didn’t say anything at the time because I wanted to wait and see what naturally came about. This past Spring Mollie was telling me a little about their wedding planning and them needing to find a photographer was mentioned. I knew they had been looking and had even asked me for a few suggestions but the more I thought about someone else being their photographer, the more I realized I wanted it to be me. Being their wedding photographer would be such an honor, not only would I be able to be a part of every aspect of the big day, but I would also be giving them lasting memories from the greatest day of their lives. I battled back and forth for a while until one day I woke up feeling at peace about it – I wanted to photograph their wedding.

Later that morning I went to check our mail and saw a small rectangular envelope addressed to me in familiar handwriting. The return address was from Mollie. At first I wasn’t sure what it was and my first thought was that it was a postcard from her recent trip to Iceland; however, after opening it and seeing the adorable hand made card, I started crying…in the post office. It was an invitation to be one of her bridesmaids!!! Eek!!! I honestly never expected to get a bridesmaid invite because I truly thought they were only having family. After shedding some tears I decided that that I would leave the photography decision up to Mollie and Luke. Long story short (and many, many text convos later) they chose to hire and I couldn’t be happier!!!!!! You can be sure I’ll be the one shedding some happy tears behind my camera … thank goodness for fast shutter speeds 🙂 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0001 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0002 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0003 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0004 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0005 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0006 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0007 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0008 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0009 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0010 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0011 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0012 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0013 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0014 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0015 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0016 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0017 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0018 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0019 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0023LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0020 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0021 LukeMollie_AbiElainePhotography__0022

Urban Romance in Boston

Waking up at 4:30 to drive into Boston for an engagement shoot is something you never really look forward to. However, on the drive into the city, watching the sun slowly creep it’s way up into the perfectly blue sky, I was suddenly very excited for such an amazing opportunity. It’s not every day a couple is willing to wake up super early to get prepped and ready for an engagement shoot. 9 times out of 10, couple’s prefer afternoon engagements, but Eric and Hannah are the outdoorsy, adventurist type, so naturally this was no big thing.

From their amazing wardrobe choices to the incredible urban location, everything about Eric and Hannah’s engagement session was a dream. The light seemed to bounce playfully off the tall buildings creating a soft glow everywhere we turned and Hannah and Eric were such a joy for me to photograph. There’s nothing better than fun couples that aren’t afraid of showing affection and love for one another in front of my camera. Plus, just look at them!! Talk about a gorgeous couple! To say I’m excited to photograph their wedding would be an understatement.EricHannah_AbiElainePhotography__0001 EricHannah_AbiElainePhotography__0002 EricHannah_AbiElainePhotography__0003From the bride-to-be:

How we met:

In the fall of 2009 we both entered the part-time MBA program at Boston University. A great group of friends formed at B.U. that included both myself and Eric, not realizing at the time that this group of friends would be the start of a new and exciting chapter in our lives. Neither of us remembers exactly when we met during the first year of the program but we can both confirm that we noticed each other sitting across the classroom. Fast-forward two years to International Finance class in the summer of 2011. Eric had walked into class that day with stitches in his face and missing an eyebrow, apparently blaming it on a “wakeboarding” accident. Naturally I was intrigued. The night of our class final just happened to be the same night game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals was on, so being the responsible students we were, we raced through the exam to get out in time to catch the game. The Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup that night but more importantly it was the first time we can remember being out alone without the rest of our group of friends. Together watching the Bruins win the Stanley Cup playoffs in Fenway, somehow we both knew something had changed between us. Perhaps it was the initial intrigue or subtle glances across the classroom. Or perhaps it was our common enthusiasm for the Bruins. Whatever it was, it was the start of a relationship that quickly evolved from a casual friendship to much, much more.

From the bride-to-be:

The proposal:

It was a Saturday in December and I assumed we would be doing the same thing we did most Saturday’s in the winter – snowboard at Cannon Mountain. I had noticed Eric was a little out of sorts when he was pulled over for speeding, a move more typical of myself. The day went mostly as planned, including poor early season skiing conditions that sent us back to the house half way through the day. After a bit of convincing to get re-dressed in Eric’s oversized ski clothes that I would later regret wearing for such a significant moment, we decided to go for an afternoon walk. We’ve always enjoyed walking together, no matter the season, since it’s often the only time we busy professionals get to spend together without any distractions. As this particular walk came to a close, Eric veered away from our house down to a scenic overlook. I climbed up the snow bank to take in the view but when I turned back around I didn’t see Eric until I looked down. There on a bended knee was my handsome Eric holding a ring box (that we later realized was upside down) he’d been concealing for the entire walk. I gracefully jumped off the snow bank (aka – slipped and half fell off the snow bank) and joined Eric down on the ground where we fell into an embrace with snow falling on top of us. Storybook proposal or not, we truly look forward to sharing many happy years of shared passion for an active, sporty, and entertaining lifestyle together.

Mike + Courtney 5.31.14

When I first met Mike and Courtney for their engagement shoot, I immediately knew I loved them. They’re both super fun, laid back, and sappy romantics like myself. Being able to photograph their wedding day was such a pleasure, everyone was happy, having fun, and accepting of me intruding into their worlds. And despite the sprinkles we had on and off in the morning, the sun game bursting through the clouds just in time for photos to begin.

From the start of our email conversations, I knew Courtney was super organized (yay!!). She actually planned her entire wedding almost by herself! Everything went of without a hitch and at one point Courtney stated that it had all come out exactly as she had envisioned it would. So awesome to hear a happy bride say things like that! And truly, everything came together perfectly for their wedding day, from the rustic elegance of the venue and decor to the woodland feel of her ceremony, it was beautiful!

Huge thanks to the amazing Emily Herzig for her gorgeous floral arrangements and to the incredible ladies at Bishop Farm – Annie, Heather, and Maggie. These ladies seriously rock it out on a wedding day and are amazing to work with!!!
